Deborah Rich was born and raised in Texas. She attended junior high, high school, and two years of college in Evanston, Illinois. She moved to California in 1972. Earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from California State University. Art major focused on art history and painting. Currently she spends her time painting in Northern California's Lake Tahoe area and in Baja California Sur, Mexico.
From an early age Deborah enjoyed drawing and coloring with pencil and crayons. As a young girl she loved coloring books and copying her mother's fashion sketches. Age 9, Deborah took her first photography class. In high school, age 14, she took her first painting class and fell in love with paint. Age 18, she won her first award in the Evanston-Lake Shore Area Regional Exhibition for a painting completed at age 15. Encouraged by her high school art teacher Deborah earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from California State University with an Art major focused in Art History and Painting. She has studied watercolor painting with Norma Carder - Sierra College, Sacramento, California and plein air oil painting with California Master artists, Gregory Kondos and Phyllis Shafer, www.phyllisshafer.com - University of Nevada, Reno, Lake Tahoe Campus, Incline Village, Nevada. Deborah's first commission piece was completed in 1992. Deborah has been painting, exhibiting and selling her artwork both in the United States and Mexico. She works mainly in acrylic and oil, but enjoys watercolor, and drawing with charcoal, graphite and ink. She draws preliminary sketches of an idea with pencil or charcoal, then she draws or paints the image onto canvas, paper, or wood surfaces. Her artwork is representational, conceptual, and sometimes bordering on the surreal. The colors in her palette are bright. The ideas and inspiration for her paintings come from her imagination or from life experiences with animals, people, and places. Mexico's bright colors and designs have influenced some of her earlier paintings. She won her second award for her painting "Lake Tahoe" in 2011 in an International Artist Competition and Exhibition at the Wee Fine Art Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona. Third award in Fashion for "Mexican Woman with Blankets" in the 2015 American Art Awards. Fourth award in Manipulated Photography Humans or Animals for "Duke With His Christmas Present" in the 2018 American Art Awards. Deborah's paintings have been published in Southwest Art Magazine. Her paintings hang in private homes and businesses in the United State and Mexico.
Deborah is affiliated with North Tahoe Arts in Tahoe City, California. She has been an artist in the Artour studio tours and exhibited in the Main gallery. Deborah was a member of the NTA Artisan Shop from 2016-2021 and on the Exhibit Committee.
Her first solo exhibition was in 2003 in the Local Color Art Studio and Gallery, Incline Village, Nevada. Her second solo exhibition was in 2011 in the North Tahoe Arts Main Gallery. www.northtahoearts.com
